Window Exteriors

These pieces from my most recent show are all taken from restaurant and store fronts in Ottawa. While the subject is radically different from the industrial works, I view them as a natural extension of the themes in those pieces.

These pieces all contain the same strong architectural elements which drew me to the industrial themes in the earlier works - although the architecture is sometimes an architecture of light instead of metal. Instead of pushing the relationship between multiple subjects, these pieces begin to challenge the relationship between the viewer and the subject.

The viewer wants and expects to engage with the apparent subject of the paintings - whatever is behind the window. However, the reflections on the glass creates a boundary. The viewer is pushed to engage at a different depth than is first anticipated, creating a sense of tension.

"Window Shopping" ran from October 15-December 7, 2010, at Dale Smith Gallery in Ottawa.
